Happy Researching: Dewey Expands Data Access for Academic Research

Since Dewey was founded in 2022, we have been focused on streamlining academic data access workflows. Laser-focused on what makes academic researchers' lives easier, especially in challenging times. We have talked to hundreds of researchers kicking off projects, evaluated over 200 data providers, seen 1,000TB+ of data downloaded just this year, and aligned strategies with data librarians who dedicate their careers to the success of academics. We have learned a lot, and in this next version of Dewey are doubling down on one thing: happy researching.

Today, we unveil an improved product with multiple features and enhancements designed to delight our users and ease the load on the dedicated librarians who support them. You can discover, evaluate, and access the data you need faster than ever.

What you'll find in the product

Connect to data outside of the Dewey Subscription (Institutional Only)
We're solving the problem that every researcher knows too well. You need a specific dataset for your project, but tracking it down means navigating fragmented vendor websites, unclear pricing, and lengthy procurement processes. Many data providers simply won't work with academic researchers at all.

The new Connect section of the Dewey Platform changes that. We're launching with eight providers initially, but more are joining every month. Our launch partners include Cotality, L2, Data Axle, Revelio Labs, AnaChart, Revelio Labs, Extract Alpha, Construction Monitor, and IPqwery. If you have a dataset that you license directly, feel free to put us in touch, and we can connect the pipes for university subscribers.

This expands how researchers discover, evaluate, and access premium datasets beyond what's available in the Dewey subscription. It builds on our foundation by giving you access to additional premium datasets through a streamlined, transparent process. Think of it as extending your research toolkit with curated data from trusted providers, without the traditional procurement headaches.

You get the same familiar interface for discovery, downloads, project management, and team collaboration, just with access to even more data sources. For librarians, we're streamlining data deliveries through one intuitive dashboard so you can manage permissions with the granular control you need, without the administrative headaches you don't.

Your published work is now part of the Dewey experience, for everyone.

When you update a project status and include a public link, you have the option to make it discoverable on the Dewey Platform. That means other researchers exploring the same datasets can find your paper right alongside the data that powered it. Find a whole database of recent work in the new “Research” section of the navigation bar. 

No more siloed discoveries. No more duplicated effort. The research community built around Dewey data starts showing up in the place you're already doing your work.

Grants
This one should really make you smile. Dewey was built for academic researchers. Not enterprise sales teams, not hedge funds- academic researchers. And nothing makes that clearer than this.

We're building grants and discounts directly into the platform, because funding shouldn't be the thing standing between you and your next project. If you're an individual researcher without institutional access, this one's for you.

Published a paper using Dewey data? That's a discount. Committing to multi-year research? Even bigger savings. Keep an eye out for event grants if you plan on presenting work that cites data from Dewey.

There is a new tool for access control on the dataset level. Manage permissions with the granular control you need, without the administrative headaches you don't. This sets us up for a lot of custom permissioning in the future, so we can manage all of your datasets.
