About the data
The American Community Survey is the Census Bureau's most detailed source of information on the nation's people and housing. It has run continuously since 2005, collecting social, economic, housing, and demographic data from a sample of households across the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
It spans more than 40 topics — education, employment, income, housing, transportation — and releases new estimates every year. Local officials, planners, and researchers use it to allocate funding and decide where to site public services.
Five-year estimates pool responses across five years of collection. That trades currency for precision, which is what makes analysis at block group level possible at all.
Why we offer this
The Census Bureau publishes ACS for free, but getting bulk access at block group granularity is slow work. Table IDs are cryptic, geographies arrive in separate files, and margins of error sit apart from the estimates they belong to.
On Dewey the tables are cleaned, documented, and joinable on shared geography to every other dataset in the catalog. Free with or without a subscription — if you do not have one, create an account with a valid .edu email address.
